So far this program has been the initiative of only the 35 bed Ulysses hospital. 12 out of a total of 26 nurses of the hospital were interested in participating in this program. A number of nurses have in fact already been and worked at the center; putting in about 8-12 hours, for 3-4 days each.
A registered nurse, who is 35 years old and has spent the previous five years in Ulysses seems excited at the opportunity. She flew to Kansas City where she was assigned to the hematology unit and took care of bone marrow, kidney and liver transplant patients. The nurses are flown on their outreach plane and housed at the medical center during their scheduled stops to western Kansas.

He further added that he hopes that through the participating nurses, their entire staff will be enlightened; facilitating an overall improvement in patient care. And it was surprising to see how well they fit in. She pointed that they were good practitioners, and performed well with only some instructions. The staff is also happy to have such hardworking nurses. The program can't be successful without the outreach plane which has a capacity of seven as it takes the doctors out to conduct seminars.
For part time work at the center, there are nurses coming in from a number of places; including Topeka, Paola, Fort Scott and Manhattan. Two to three nurses at one time can catch a ride in the plane on its return trips. One passenger feels that though the trips have to be planned well in advance, they are actually worth all the effort.
She had to put in much thought and planning into it; but is once again ready for it. The nurse pointed out that she has a lot of support from her daughters 8 and 14 years old respectively who want her to have the opportunity to enhance her skills.
